Provinssirock is the largest international rock festival in Finland. It is placed in the Törnävä Festival Park for the 32nd time from June 18th to June 20th 2010. The organisation behind Provinssirock is Seinäjoki Live Music Association, Selmu ry, founded in 1992 to continue the work of Kemu ry. Kemu ry is the original force behind the Festival.
During its existence since 1979, Provinssirock has gone through many changes and seen its share of economic ups and downs. The number of festival goers grew steadily from the first Festival until late 1980's, when the temporary drawbacks of the recession hit. When the Festival was still organised by Kemu ry, the Festival was the most successful between the years 1986 and 1988 - the two day event gained audience of 35,000 to 40,000. The Festival kept growing from the 1993 two day event (with an audience of 12,000) until an all time high in summer 2008 three-day-event were sold out with an audience of 75,000 visitors!
The driving force behind Provinssirock's continuous success is the attraction of top artists from Finland and abroad, well organised events and the organising association's will to renew and develop the festival year after year.
The Festival organisation is mainly based on Selmu ry.'s houndreds of volunteers. In addition, approximately 400 people, from sports clubs and such, take care of different jobs during the Festival and are paid nominal amounts. The core organisation of the Festival consists of Selmu ry.'s board and a promoter, production manager, executive secretary, financial secretary, sales and marketing manager and other employees hired by the association. Also, some 1,400 other people work during the Festival, including the artists, technical staff, press, sales force, medical staff (first-aid personnel), etc. Quite a lot of employees for an event that started out as one-day-thing!
Seinäjoki Live Music Association - Selmu ry
Selmu ry. follows the basic principles of a non-profit association, and its main objective is to promote and develop live music by bringing together and encouraging the creators of live music and consumers of different music cultures and culture organisations, as defined in association rules. The association makes foreign music cultures more known in the Finnish scene, and vice versa - makes people aware of Finnish music abroad.
